The existing field test standards supporting the TIA 568 series of standards version  was added for 2G field testing (the name 2G stands for Accuracy Level and came from the need for Category 8 testing at 2 GHz).


If you are familiar with the accuracy levels of the previous cable categories then you may be wondering why the next level is not named IV. This is because accuracy levels IV and V already exist in the  standards for Class F and FA cabling systems. The standard was approved for publication at the end of 2016.

Verification tools perform a basic continuity check, that is, they verify that all wires in a cable line are connected to the correct endpoints and not to any other conductors. The cable twisted-pair systemsit is important to maintain proper wire connection. More sophisticated testers also check wire connections and detect installation defects such as pair separation. 


Checkers can also aid in troubleshooting by acting as a tone generator to locate the cable line. Some testers contain additional components, such as a Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR), to determine the length of the cable or the distance to the point of a break or short circuit. These test instruments do not provide information on the bandwidth or suitability of the cable for high speed data transmission.

Qualification testers meet the needs of network professionals who do not install new cabling but must troubleshoot existing networks. Qualification testers determine whether an existing link will meet Fast Ethernet (100BASE-TX), Gigabit Ethernet, or Voice over IP (VoIP) specifications. These testers also enable network technicians to quickly separate cable problems from network protocol or addressing problems. 


Qualification Testing Instruments such as the CableIQ ™ Qualification Tester, have all the capabilities of a test instrument for verification, but are more effective because they assess the throughput and identify the faults that affect it. Qualification testers do not perform the set of tests prescribed by the standards for “certification tools”.

In the global marketplace, telecommunication cabling standards are created and maintained by the Electrotechnical Commission of the International Organization for Standardization.
