Local power is not always accessible to wireless access points, IP phones, and other network devices that can be installed in ceilings, hallways, stairways, and other remote areas. Adding plugs near these devices can be extremely difficult and expensive.
Why not provide a network connection and power to these devices with the same cable? This question is answered with Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology. PoE is a technology designed to provide power to network devices using existing data communications cabling. Various PoE standards can supply power of up to 25.5 watts, while non-standard schemes can offer 60 watts or more.
However, not all cables are compatible with all power levels. Worse, many cables can deliver power intermittently, which can lead to extremely difficult problems to solve. Certifying the cable to make sure it meets the relevant standards is the easiest way to avoid these problems. Specialized measurements, such as the resistance imbalance found in the DSX series, can be invaluable in solving these problems.
