Checking instruments perform basic continuity operations, making sure that all wires in a wiring link are connected to the appropriate break points and not to another conductor. It is essential to maintain the correct pairing of wires in twisted pair cabling. The best verification testing tools also verify wire pairing and detect installation faults such as 'split pairs'. Verification test tools can also aid in troubleshooting by generating a dial tone to locate a wiring link. Verification test instruments sometimes include additional functionality, such as a Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) to determine the length of the hardwire link or locate an open or short circuit on the link under test. These test instruments do not provide any information on bandwidth or suitability for high speed data transmission.
Qualifying test devices are part of a new class of testing devices that meet the needs of network technicians who are not installing new cabling but who need to troubleshoot networks. Qualifying testers perform the tests that decide whether an existing cabling link supports "Fast Ethernet" (100BASE-TX), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), or Gigabit Ethernet requirements. These test tools additionally allow the network technician to quickly isolate or resolve network protocol cabling issues. Qualification testing instruments, such as CableIQ ™ Qualification Tester, include all the capabilities of verification test instruments, but are more powerful in that they perform a cable bandwidth assessment and identify errors that affect bandwidth. Qualifying testers do not perform the full range of tests prescribed by standards to be considered "certification tools.
