Testing network cables provides assurance that the installed cable links provide the desired transmission capacity to support the data communication desired by users.
Network cabling test instruments are designed with various functions for specific field tasks. They have different price, performance, and applications. Depending on the task that the test instrument performs in the field, it can be classified into one of three hierarchical groups: certification, qualification, or verification. While a few characteristics are common to many test tools, each group addresses a unique testing need and provides a different level of operational assurance. Another test solution, tone generator and probe kits, can be used to troubleshoot wiring installations.
Certification instruments are the only tools that provide “pass” or “fail” information according to industry standards. In the North American market, the main industry standards body dealing with structured cabling transmission capabilities is the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). In international markets, the Electrotechnical Commission of the International Organization for Standards (ISO / IEC) creates and maintains standards for telecommunication cabling.
